To help identify if you have too little stomach acid this simple test can be carried out at home:

Firstly, this test must be performed on an empty stomach, so first thing in the morning may be best.

You will need:

  • 1 glass
  • One level teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda
  • 60 ml of tap water

Method:

Measure one level teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and dissolve this into the glass of water. Drink it on an empty stomach. (Check expiration date of container)

  • If you have adequate stomach acid, the bicarbonate of soda will be converted into gas and produce bloating and belching within five to ten minutes. (Just drink more water to dilute and minimise the effects of the bicarbonate of soda.)
  • If you do not have any effect, you are likely to be suffering from low stomach acid.
